About Barnes Bullets
Fred Barnes, founder of Barnes Bullets, began selling bullets out of his basement workshop in Bayfield, CO in 1932. Randy and Coni Brooks purchased the company in 1974 and moved the business to American Fork, Utah. Years later in 1985, Randy conceived the idea of an expanding all-copper bullet on a hunting trip. Their prototype became the world-renowned X Bullet® and changed the way hunters viewed bullet construction and terminal performance. Today, Barnes products are highly trusted and respected among hunters and shooters worldwide.
Despite its oft maligned tactical long-range limitations in standard issue format, the 5.56×45 ammo is capable of reaching out to exceptional distances when the appropriate barrels are loaded with purpose specific ammunition. With a heavier bullet out of a slower twist barrel, the 5.56 can maintain superior ballistic coefficient in flight.
The 85 grain bullet by Barnes is an Open Tip Match (OTM) type with a pronounced boat tail for impressive long range stability and accuracy. With a muzzle velocity of 2600 feet per second and 1276 foot pounds of energy, this bullet is designed for precision shooting where accuracy is prized above knock down capabilities. Never the less, this is NOT a cartridge that should be fired from .223 Remington chambers.
Barnes Precision ammunition is loaded with the company’s own Open Tip Match bullet with long boat tail for additional stability down range. Introduced in 2015, the Precision line represents the latest in tactical and match shooting from a company that has built an over eight decade long reputation on providing the best either in or out of military service. Of course, boxer primed cases offer further value for those who do reload their own competition cartridges.
